Core Services

Core Services
ACIL offers services for people who want to live independently. Here are the five main services we provide:
1. Advocacy Self-System
At ACIL, we believe that if you have a disability, you are your own best advocate. Our staff can help you navigate the often complicated process of overcoming obstacles to live the way you want. If you need help with any barriers—like physical challenges or other issues—please contact us at (304) 965-0376.
2. Independent Living Skills Training
Our program helps people learn or relearn the skills they need to live on their own. We offer training in different areas that can help you become more independent in your daily life.
3. Peer Counseling and Support
Our Peer Counselors are people with disabilities who can help others by sharing their own experiences. They understand what you might be going through and can serve as role models. You can meet with a peer counselor one-on-one or in a group. We also have counselors available to talk to people in nursing homes or hospitals. These discussions can cover helpful topics, from where to find medical supplies to coping with depression. Connecting with someone who understands can make a big difference.
4. Information and Referrals
The Appalachian Center for Independent Living (ACIL) provides information about resources in the community for people with disabilities. We give information directly to individuals and also share resources with family members, friends, employers, and service providers.
5. Transition Services
We help individuals with significant disabilities move from nursing homes and other institutions to their own homes and communities. We also assist those at risk of entering institutions to help them stay in the community. Additionally, we support young adults with disabilities transitioning from school to life after graduation.
