Core Services

ACIL offers services for those wishing to remain indenpendent and living on their own. The four core services offered by ACIL are Advocacy Self-System, Independent Living and Skills Training, Peer Counseling and Information and Referals

Advocacy Self-System

ACIL believes if you are a person with a disability, you are your own best advocate. Our staff can help people with disabilities through the sometimes complicated process of removing barriers to living the lifestyle they choose. If you are a person with a disability, and need help with a physical, programmatic or attitudianal barrier, feel free to contact Meredith Pride at (304) 965-0376 or meredithacilwv@yahoo.com.

Independent Living and Skills Training

Through our facilities, as well as the community, this program helps people to gain or relearn the skills they need to live independently in their own environment. ACIL offers training in a variety of areas that can help an individual become more independent.

Peer Counseling

Peer Counselors are persons with disabilities who are uniquely qualified to help others by sharing similar experiences and serving as a role model. ACIL has several individuals with disabilities willing to discuss issues and concerns that many other people wouldn't understand. This service is available one-on-one or in a group setting. We even have peer counselors who are available to talk with people with a disabilities who are currently in a nursing home or hospital. Peer counselors share and exchange various types of helpful information - with discussion topics ranging from where to get medical supplies to dealing with depression and adjusting to a disability. These discussions can often be helpful simply by letting the person with a disability know that they are not the only one dealing with a particular problem or situation.

Information and Referrals

The Appalachian Center for Independent Living, Inc provides information about community resources that are available to people with disabilities. We provide information and referrals directly to people with disabilities, and we provide information to other interested people such as family members, friends, employers and service providers.
